Lamu

Timeless, tranquil and steeped in Swahili heritage.

Lamu is a place where ancient Swahili traditions, turquoise waters and centuries-old architecture come together along Kenya’s northern coast. From the winding streets of Lamu Old Town to the quiet beaches and surrounding islands, life moves at a slower, more graceful rhythm. But beyond its beautiful shores lies another Lamu — shaped by rich history, vibrant culture and the timeless connection between the ocean and the communities who have called it home for generations.

Experiences We Love

Where to Stay

Lamu offers stays that capture the island’s timeless character, from elegant Swahili retreats and intimate boutique hotels to secluded villas overlooking the Indian Ocean. Whether tucked among the historic streets of Lamu Old Town, set beside the peaceful shores of Shela or hidden along a quiet stretch of coastline, each offers its own way to experience this extraordinary island. Here, where you stay becomes part of the experience — bringing you closer to the ocean, the culture and the unhurried rhythm of Lamu.

Peponi Hotel

Peponi Hotel is a small boutique hotel on the remote island of Lamu, situated in the Indian Ocean off the North Kenyan coast. Run by the Korschen family who happened upon the old building by chance in the 1960’s.

The Majlis Resorts

Refined elegance on a quiet stretch of Ras Kitau Bay, looking across the channel to Shela village. The Majlis blends the sophistication of Italian design with Swahili soul — a boutique escape in the heart of the Lamu Archipelago, where barefoot luxury meets soulful heritage.

Nestled along the picturesque coast of Lamu Island at Shela Village, just steps from the beach, Kijani Hotel beckons you to experience its serene beauty.

Just a short stroll from the main village jetty you will find our charming retreat, surrounded by swaying palms and traditional makuti roofs.
